A few weeks ago, I was on my way to Dr. Meckbach, my dentist / Zahnarzt in Frankfurt to clean my teeth and start the home bleaching process. On the way, I ran into a friend of mine. He asked where I am going and I happily said, “To my dentist.” He looked confused. He asked me, if I am going to the dentist, then why do I look so happy? I could see him processing the information in his mind.

It was at that instant that I realized something very important. People still see going to the dentist as a painful and terrible thing. They associate it with pain and also when something is wrong with their teeth. Therefore I decided to write this important article to explain that going to the dentist has really changed! It’s not just about fixing something painful anymore.

In today’s time: Going to the dentist is about beauty and aesthetics. Long gone are the torturous and painful dentist visits. Now it’s the same as going to get your hair, nails and botox done. It has become a normal part of the beauty routine, and can even be achieved during your lunch break.

I had a call with Jens Lindner, the lovely marketing genius at the Praxisgemeinschaft at the Max-Beckmann-Haus. We scheduled a thorough consultation, an appointment for the cleaning and bleaching procedure and within a week, everything was done! No time wasted and no pain – fast and easy.

Dr. Meckbach explained to me that there are a few interesting things that can be done in terms of beauty and aesthetics these days:

 

  1. Teeth cleaning:

    This is a basic must! Everyone should get their teeth cleaned at least once a year. This involves the removal of dental plaque from teeth with the intention of preventing cavities (caries), tartar, gingivitis, and periodontal disease. After the cleaning, my teeth always feel smooth and look much whiter.

 

  1. Veneers:

    is a layer of ceramic placed over a tooth. Veneers improve the aesthetics of the smile and protect the tooth’s surface from damage. If you have ever wondered why Hollywood actors all have such a perfect smile, it’s because of their veneers.

 

  1. Home Bleaching:

    A fast, comfortable, easy and painless way to bleach your teeth in the comfort of your own home. Take a look at my teeth bleaching video at the bottom of this article.

 

  1. Clear Invisalign aligners:

    are orthodontic devices that use incremental transparent aligners to adjust teeth as an alternative to dental braces. The great thing is that it’s see-through, and unlike braces, nobody can see that you are wearing Invisalign. They can also be temporarily removed and placed back in again.

 

  1. The Digital Smile Design Concept (DSD):

    seeks to present to the world a new face of dentistry. It is more human, emotional and artistic, but also more efficient and precise with the help of digital technology. After all there are not many things in this life that are more important than a healthy, natural, confident and beautiful smile.

Last week, my lovely friend Jessica picked me up and we drove to Erdogu die Friseure in Bad Nauheim, Germany. I was not sure what to expect, but Jessica said that this was her favorite salon. I always trust that my girlfriends have great taste, so I knew right away that this will be a wonderful trip, and it definitely was!

Upon our arrival, Filiz Erdogu, the salon owner greeted us with a warm smile and a friendly hug. I got a nice tour of the place and was shown where the magic happens. I was pleasantly surprised when a beautiful young lady brought us a healthy breakfast to jumpstart our day. There is nothing like starting a Friday with delicious food, a healthy drink and beautiful hair.

I met Filiz’s great team who was in charge, and the lovely Özlem Albayrak was my chosen colorist. This was her plan for my hair:

1. Classic Highlights

  • With 3 different blond colors
  • 3 various bleaching levels to achieve a shimmering shading effect

2. Cellphones Treatment

  • Cellophanes protein treatment mixed in with Olaplex for amazing hair structure
  • Cellophanes is an organic hair color from the USA.
  • This closes the hair shaft and works as a long term treatment
  • I got 2 different tones in my hair:
    • Champagne Blonde: Brilliant, clear beige rose tone
    • Vanilla Blonde: Adds a delicate beige depth to blonds and highlights.

3. Styling

  • The team chose to style my hair straight.
  • I usually like my Hollywood waves, but decided to go straight chic this time.
  • I really don’t like cutting my hair, so it was left as it is

What impressed me a lot was Özlem’s love for perfection! She carefully colored each strand of my hair like it was a Mondrian painting – always staying inside the lines. I have never seen such careful attention to details. That really reminded me of myself, because I also have the perfection bone in my body. I admire and adore excellent and precise work.

After all of the Cellophanes were washed away and my hair was styled, I look at myself in the mirror and loved what I saw! The Erdogu die Friseure Team managed to get my hair in the lovely cold shade that I adore so much. I am not a big fan of very warm blonde, and it is always hard to get that perfect shade of “cool” – but this lovely team managed to do it perfectly. I will definitely be back for more.

 

HEALTH 

As many of you have seen my posts on Instagram this month, I am trying out a new drink, which is the healthiest one I have tried in a while.

It is the Pure Tea from the company Pfanner. I love carrying my own drinks around with me, so I took the fruit-flavored tea with me to the salon and let the ladies try it. They also loved it as much as I do. What I really like about this product is:

  • There are 0 calories, 0 sugar inside and absolutely no sweeteners.
  • I am currently going through a detox phase and avoiding all sugars, therefore this fits perfectly.
  • Light and tasty. No sticky feeling.
  • For me, this is the best alternative to water. I always drink water and finally needed a change.
  • Great for yoga and sports because of the light taste, and it really quenches the thirst.

  • It tastes the best served ice cold on a hot summer day like this week.

My conclusion is that beauty and health go hand-in-hand. I guess you really cannot have one without the other. I ended my week with a glamorous new hair makeover and an amazing new drink discovery that will be my companion for a long time to come.

It’s Friday night, and you are having a cocktail with your girlfriends, chatting about life. Your friend mentions that she is flying to Bali on holiday with her husband for two weeks. Of course you are happy for her, but still something tugs at your heartstrings, wishing that you also had a wonderful partner to enjoy a romantic and relaxing holiday with, not to mention spending hours making love there! After ordering your next Bloody Mary, you tell the girls about the fabulous promotion that your boss gave you today. You have achieved that executive position you always dreamed of having, and the success is finally yours! Out of the corner of your eye, you see your friend looking longingly at you. Little do you know, but she would immediately give everything up, including her Bali trip, to have such a wonderful career as yours! So my dears, which is it that you want? Love, money, or health? Is it possible to have it all?

Most likely, you already have one out of the three. The problem is that usually this is under-appreciated due to the fact that you long for what you do not have. You are not the only one like that. I am as well, and actually almost everyone is like this. You have a wonderful wife? Great, but you spend most of your free time at work, trying to get an even higher salary, and end up ruining your marriage due to lack of time and attention to your woman. Or you are as healthy as an 18-year-old, but jump from job to job, while playing around and breaking hearts. Wishing and lusting for the next adventure? Well, maybe it’s time to stop and think for a minute. Repeat after me: “What do I have and what do I want?” Sometimes, it is not even necessary to have all three in order to be truly happy.

Love (in its “pure” form) is the ultimate drug that gets you so high, even if you refuse to surrender to it. Gentlemen, you might think that being called “Mr. Bond”, because you are a player, is the highest level of being that you can achieve in life? Sorry, but you are wrong. Once true love gets you, it will dig its long red lacy fingers into your body. Inside, it will eat its way through those pulsating muscles and settle directly in the middle of your live beating heart! And believe me, it will be the best feeling you could ever dream of! Funny, but this thing called love usually comes to the ones that either don’t want it, or are not expecting it. So if you want to have a taste of this hypnotic True-Love-Drug, then stop looking for it… because it will find you.

Success and money however, are two little devils that you actually have to work at achieving. Nothing will come from nothing. I always say the most important step is to start. If you are seeking to achieve, then start doing something, and the rest will open itself up to you. Like the old Russian proverb: “Water doesn’t flow under a rock lying on the ground (Nothing ventured, nothing gained).” It’s strange, but always works out this way: once you start working towards your goal, situations and people will open themselves up to you in order to help you upon your path. Money is nice to have because it helps you to live, but please do not expect that it will bring you the ultimate happiness that you desire.

Health has a life of its own. This Health-Character is strange because he comes and goes as he pleases. Of course you can keep him longer by your side, but he is known to be very unpredictable. My mom always screams at me to do sports, however I am the type that prefers sitting on the couch, eating a Big Mac on the weekend. She says that doing sports will strengthen my immune system and keep me healthier. I always argue with her that doing what you love, like me eating burgers, keeps my soul happy. Doing things that you love makes you happy, and being happy increases your health. Of course she doesn’t buy this argument. So listen to the wiser ones than myself, do some sports, and improve your immune system. A few years ago I started with yoga and it makes me very happy. There are definitely things that you can do to increase your health and well-being. I always say that having some loving hobby, something that you enjoy from the bottom of your heart, will make you happy and healthy. For me, this is food and yoga. Without good health, you cannot enjoy your money, success and love, so this is a very crucial point to work on!

With all that has been said, I ask you to look at yourself and your life now. If you have one of the three (love, money, health), then you are lucky. If you have two out of the three, then consider yourself damn lucky! However, if you have all of the above, then I would like to interview you personally, because this means that you were born with a lucky star and are a very special person! Cherish what you have dear friends! Do not look at others that have more or less than you. (There will always be people that have more or less). Concentrate on your life and make the best out of what was given to you. We often forget how lucky we truly are, so now is the time to be grateful and enjoy life!

This one is for the ladies and gentlemen who have asked me how I managed to drop 10 kg and succeeded at looking better, healthier and fitter. This article marks the 2-year Anniversary of writing my column, so I will open up to you today, and tell you how I personally managed my big transformation this year.

It all started on January 1st 2014, when I didn’t fit into my favorite jeans anymore. It was the day after New Year’s Eve, and I looked around the flat, disgusted by the fast food boxes from the nights before. I wasn’t happy with my body, excess fat and cellulite anymore. It always annoyed me to hear people talking about doing sports, getting fit and working out. Even worse were the people talking about eating healthy food, salads, less carbs, blah blah blah. I thought, “How pathetic, what kind of life is that?” I only had pizza and burgers on my mind. I liked to show off that I could eat whatever and whenever I want to. One day, my best friend showed me a bikini photo of us from the previous summer in Ibiza. I was shocked. My stomach was hanging over the bikini bottoms and the cellulite was all over my thighs. My upper arms were flabby and my bum was much more than what I bargained for. I know that happiness comes from the inside, and we should love ourselves no matter what we look like, but I wasn’t happy with what I saw in the mirror. I wanted to be fit and toned!

The very first thing I changed was not to eat after 6pm. I don’t mean no carbs after 6pm, but rather nothing at all! Of course I drink water and tea, but no food at all after this hour. I go to sleep around midnight, so that leaves me with 6 hours to digest the food I ate in the early evening. What I noticed right away was how amazingly flat my stomach was when waking up in he morning! I feel light, and sleep better – since the body is not working on digesting the food that I would usually eat at 9pm or later. I do have to warn you though: it was a living hell at the beginning. The first two weeks were horrendous torture. I would walk around my flat hungry and angry like a monster. What worked was to go to sleep earlier in order to avoid this feeling. After a few weeks, my stomach and body got used to not eating after 6pm, and it was completely normal for me. The nice thing is that I don’t have the energy ups and downs anymore, but rather a constant energy flow throughout the day. I make the rare exception and eat later if I’m out for dinner with friends, but try not to break this rule very often.

I start my day at 8am with a cup of coffee and a big glass of water. I have breakfast around 10am, and eat something light, like cereal, eggs or a small sandwich. I’m not a believer in the Atkins or low-carb diet. I’ve done them and the Ketogenic diet as well, but it’s not for me. Carbs make me super happy, and I can’t deny myself of eating them. Life is short and we have to enjoy! I eat my lunch around 2pm. For me, lunch is the most important meal, and not breakfast. For lunch I usually eat a large salad with chicken or turkey inside. I like Caesar salad, and I’m not afraid to eat the dressing that goes with it, and some bread too. Fish is also good, stuffed peppers, or roasted chicken with vegetable – even with baked, boiled or mashed potatoes. I also like steaks, and once in a while eat it with French fries. I don’t deprive myself of anything! I eat what I love, but all in healthy doses. I still eat burgers, but only 1 or 2 times a month. I eat Thai food, with rice, chicken and vegetables. What I really love is sushi. Soups, vegetable sticks and fruit are great snacks for in between. I don’t eat pizza or pasta – personally for me, it’s too heavy. I usually make a nice sandwich around 5 – 6 pm with fresh vegetables on the side. I don’t eat big things for dinner, mostly a soup, wrap, salad or sandwich. I don’t usually eat desserts, cakes or pastries, because I never liked the heavy sweet taste. However, I’m not afraid to eat a few small pieces of dark chocolate during the day, because it makes me happy.

Around February, I decided to add some fun physical activity again. I tried yoga years before and thought it to be horribly boring and hippie-infested. This year I decided to try it again, and chose a dynamic course. I loved it! It melts the daily stress away, leaving me relaxed and happy. I noticed my muscles slowly developing. It looked sexy, so I started doing yoga twice a week. In April I watched a movie from the 80’s and saw a woman doing some funny Jane Fonda moves at home. A silly thought came into my head, “Why don’t I do this at home?” So I started with sit-ups, push-ups, bum busters, squats and the side plank hip lifts. I started with a small amount of 20 times on each side, and 3 sets. Now I progressed to 50 times and 3 sets. Take your own time and start slowly. Getting in shape takes time and patience! I now also use 2kg weights, and do 30 curls on each side for my biceps and triceps, and also in 3 sets. Depending on my muscle pain the next day, I either skip a day or do these exercises everyday at home. It takes a total of 1 hour for me. I wake up earlier to do them, or in the evening after work. This with yoga 2-3 times a week does the trick for me! I’m not a jogger, and never liked it. It’s boring for me and tough on the knees. But if you like it, then it’s a great cardio workout. I walk around the entire city from appointment to appointment, which is my cardio each day. Sports really help to get rid of cellulite. I see a huge difference, and am so happy with the results!

Last but not least, my most important achievement this year was to quit smoking. Gone are the stinky, horrible, expensive and nasty cancer sticks! It’s been 136 days now, and I don’t plan to touch them ever again. I can’t believe how much more energy I have without smoking. Walking fast and climbing stairs is so much easier now. I gained 3kg as soon as I quit, but I compensated with more sports, and thankfully lost those bloody kilos again. Stopping to smoke slowed my metabolism down, but I noticed that my body is getting back to normal, and is digesting quicker without the nicotine again. It takes time. For those that say I look better now, it’s definitely the non-smoking. The skin heals and renews itself. Also the healthier food and sports help to regenerate the body. What also helps me is 8 hours of sleep, and not drinking much alcohol. I drink wine about 3 times a month, but only a few glasses, and no alcohol at home. Of course don’t forget the usual: drink lots and lots of water, blah blah. No seriously, it really helps. I also take multi vitamins everyday. I won’t lie to you, getting into shape is hard at the beginning. However once you start and see results, you won’t be able to stop. You will feel so happy and proud of yourself! You will be healthier and your clothes will fit you better, and of course this increases the self-confidence a lot. Now I’m one of those annoying people bothering my friends about health and sports, and guess what? I will never go back to the way I was before. New life, new Gali.
