Galia Brener at the Cirque du Soleil – Amaluna premiere 1600 1600 Galia Brener

What a wonderful and glamorous evening! A huge thanks to my dear friend and designer Albrecht Ollendiek for my wild circus outfit! ❤ Thanks to Jörg Ortmann and BILD for the lovely interview :-)

Cirque du Soleil: Amaluna premiere in Frankfurt – 11.05.2016

Cirque du Soleil: Amaluna premiere in Frankfurt – 11.05.2016 1080 530 Galia Brener

I have to start by saying that I am so proud to be Canadian! As I walked closer to the enormous tent and saw the beautifully familiar Cirque du Soleil logo, my heart swelled with pride and joy! I have already seen quite a few different Cirque du Soleil shows, therefore I was very curious what Amaluna will be like, compared to the others.

It was a very warm day in Frankfurt. The evening sun was still out, throwing dancing shadows onto the large parking lot. We walked towards the entrance and I couldn’t help but notice people stare at me. There was a reason for that. I was clad from head to toe in my favorite Frankfurt designer’s wild collection. His name is Albrecht Ollendiek, and he’s a genius. I was wearing a mini skirt made out of feathers. This was supposed to bring me in touch with my Amazonian female self, and it did. The look was about sensuality, nature and power. It was a perfect fit for the circus atmosphere! My skirt was accompanied by a bag made out of feathers and my favorite cork high heels. I was very excited to walk around in my risqué Ollendiek concoction.

A lovely young lady gave us our VIP passes, and we walked inside the tent’s foyer. I was greeted by Jörg Ortmann of the Bild newspaper, always friendly with a warm smile on his face. Of course in the interview, I had to mention my proud Canadian heritage. Jörg asked what my favorite Cirque du Soleil show has been so far, and I said the O Show in Vegas, which played around the water element and theme. There were a few celebs in the tent as well. Just as I was finishing up my interview, Verona Pooth walked beside us and seemed to be in a hurry to get inside. A few more photos were made in front of the press wall and it was time to go inside the large tent. On our way in, we were given a cold glass of champagne with duck, oysters and other exotic delicacies. Suddenly a sexy female voice was heard on all the speakers, urging us to take our seats because the show was about to begin. There was a loud excited buzz of people talking and laughing in the tent.

Suddenly the lights went out, and a drum started beating, matching the rhythm of my heart. The sound was so thrilling and hypnotizing at the same time! The lights burst into the tent and the artist came out. What can I say… the next 2 hours were one of the most exciting for me this year. Amaluna was about a fantasy world. A world where all problems were left behind, replaced with magic, energy and enchantment! Each of the artists and shows were so different from one another that I cannot even say which one was better. Every single element of the show was so unique and special, that it contributed to the magical awe feeling of the evening. As you can imagine when thinking of Cirque du Soleil, it was all of the magic you can expect along with many more mysterious surprises! I don’t want to describe any details and ruin the fantastic experience for you, but what I can definitely say is that Amaluna is a must see! It will be in Frankfurt until June12th, and I would suggest ordering tickets as soon as possible. I was blown away by the sheer beauty, love and energy of the show

Loosely inspired by William Shakespeare’s The Tempest, Amaluna takes circus to the next dimension. Even the feathers on my skirt were shivering with excitement. The story revolves around Goddesses, men, love, passion and desire. The talented Diane Paulus, created and directed the piece to perfection.

After the show, so many people were hanging around backstage and the VIP area, because nobody wanted to leave. Everyone was excited to meet the artists and pay them their respect. More champagne and gin tonics were flowing, accompanied by colorful macaroons and the creamiest coffee I have ever tasted. It was exciting to feel the circus atmosphere around us. Cameras were flashing and the music vibrated throughout the entire tent. The press was running around, capturing the excitement of the premiere.

Eventually I felt my feet complaining about the 13 cm heels and decided to slowly make my way back home to my little sanctuary in the city center. The tall and proud skyscrapers greeted me warmly. Another glamorous event in my favorite little city with a big attitude. Thank you Frankfurt for being so good to me. Thank you Canada for bringing your magic to me, even though I’m so far away from you. Thank you Cirque du Soleil for bringing the fantasy into my life on that warm and magical evening.

Your Inner Child

Your Inner Child 800 1200 Galia Brener

I remember when I was a teenager in Toronto, my girlfriends and I had our first fake IDs made to get into clubs and parties. We couldn’t wait until our 18th birthday, and tried everything to look older. Make-up, higher heels, and sophisticated clothing. Now we are double that age, and try to do everything to look younger. Funny thing that we use the same tricks to try and turn back the aging-clock: Make-up, higher heels, and sophisticated clothing. Why did we not realize how amazing it was to be young and enjoy our childhood? Why did we always want to be older?

Society expects us to be responsible. Grow up fast, get an education, find a partner, have children, take care of them, get old, retire and die. So when do we actually have the chance to live out our dreams, and have fun? As a child you are not aware of the freedom that you have. You simply grow and become an adult. Well my dear adults, now that you are finally “there”, it’s time to reverse the process, start believing in Fairytales again, and awaken your inner child. Yes, s/he is still in there, but most likely has been sleeping for the last decades. Let’s wake it up, and see what new adventures the world has to offer us!

A common problem is that people are scared to be judged by society. What will people say if they see me like this? This reminds me of a date that I had a few years ago. I met a guy at an event in Frankfurt. Let’s call him “Mr. Cool”. On our first date, we went for a nice summer walk. Along the way, I saw a fun playground. I don’t know what has gotten into me, but I ran towards it, and decided to climb the monkey bars, run on the overhead ladder, go on the swings… you get the point. I ran around acting like a crazy kid. I glanced at Mr. Cool, and I cannot even describe the look he gave me. A mix of “Jesus-what-the-hell-are-you-doing-get-off-that-swing-immediately!” and “I-don’t-know-this-crazy-girl-she-is-such-a-weirdo” look. To be honest, at that moment I didn’t even care what the ice block Mr. Cool was thinking about me, because I was having so much fun. He came to me, and I thought that he will finally join me on the swing, but instead he said, “Galia, stop it! This is embarrassing! I am a famous actor (He is indeed a well-known German actor), what will people think of me when they see me making a fool of myself on this playground?” Right at that point, I realized that it will never work out between us. Money and fame aside, if the guy cannot be easy-going and appreciate the simple joys in life, then he is not for me. Fun is not just eating at expensive restaurants, but also doing silly things like jumping on a swing together. I politely walked with him back to where we met, said goodbye, smiled, and left as quickly as possible. Why do some people take themselves so seriously? Do we really have to stick to these rigid “Adult behavior rules”, or can we sometimes let our inner child out to play? Mr. Cool called the next day to invite me to dinner, but I told him that my heart was not in it. I could not pretend to be someone that I’m not. I was looking for the one that would climb the monkey bars with me, laughing and being crazy together like children.

That is not to say that we have to ignore our responsibilities, quite the contrary! We have to enjoy ourselves and have fun while achieving our goals and tasks. When you do something with a happy heart, your task becomes a pleasure, and the result will be better. For example, if you are cleaning your car, draw funny figures on the dirty window, and send a picture of it to your loved one. If you have to clean your flat, put on some loud music and run around the house doing funny dances, while cleaning. Do what you can to make the task more fun. I know that daily stress due to work and personal issues can bring a huge amount of pressure upon us, but we must try to do our best to make this process easier for us. Being hard on yourself will not make the problems go away. You must give your “Adult-self” a chance to rest and rethink how you can ease the pressure with a good strategy. Try doing something fun, different, childish and funny in order to bring your mind to positive thoughts. Maybe then, new problem-solving ideas will come to you! The easiest way to begin is by smiling more often.

The older I get, the more I realize how special the time was when I was a child. Free of worries, free of fear, free to live and enjoy! It’s time to bring back the innocence, joy and pure form of fun. Purity. The world is missing this. We need to go back to the basics before we had the car, the mortgage, and the debts. We have to try to capture that feeling of pure joy that we once felt as children. There is much evil and hatred out there. Just turn on the news. Every day another catastrophe. Let’s try to be children of light, instead of darkness. You can enjoy by doing the simplest of things. Remember how excited we used to be when walking with our parents in the forest, looking for mushrooms? Or making homemade cookies with our grandmother, and eating them with our friends? Try to capture this feeling again.

Maybe these few ideas can help: look at photos of your childhood, play board games, take walks around fun places, go to an amusement park, throw out the “cool” attitude/personality, and be who you are, live more in the present, sing funny songs, draw, paint (even if you cant do it well!) be curious, ask questions, daydream, try doing the things you loved to do as a kid, play video games, and most important of all, never say “I’m too old”. The child within you is waiting to come out and play. So go ahead, be silly. No one is watching! And if they do, who cares?

Karl Lagerfeld Opening Event in Frankfurt

Karl Lagerfeld Opening Event in Frankfurt 1080 530 Galia Brener

Wednesday night was the long awaited opening event of the Karl Lagerfeld store in Frankfurt. I spoke to a few friends this week and everyone was very excited to come out and play. Not only was the new collection on display, but also original sketches drawn by Mr. Lagerfeld himself, decorated the walls of the store. It was a mixture of his famous fashion sketches along with drawings of himself, portraits and other models. It was very interesting to be so up close and person with his private works of art!

As we made our way into the store, we were greeted by Daniel Tobias Etzel of the WAOH agency, who did another fabulous job at bringing all of Frankfurt’s Who’s Who together and organizing such a glamorous event! I was excited to see some friends and acquaintances, which I haven’t seen in a while, and catch up about life, hanging out in the midst of the exciting flair. There were camera flashes going off in every corner of the store. The crowd was excited, enjoying the high of the bubbly champagne, beautiful handbags and crazy outfits!

I was pondering what to wear already weeks in advance. At the moment I’m having my blue period, like my wonderful idol Picasso. Blue is not my mood, but rather the shades of my current outfits. From blue bags to blue nail polish and blue dresses. Therefore naturally, I had to wear blue for the opening!

Knowing that Lagerfeld’s beloved color is black, going a completely different shade was not such a bad idea. Since I’m a cartoon nerd, I had to wear my new Japanese manga skirt. The extravagant blue silk design has various gold ancient God images all around the skirt. I fell in love with this unique piece as soon as I saw it in the store. What’s good enough for a leading manga character is good enough for me! To get the desired full puffy effect, I wore my largest petticoat underneath the skirt. I topped it off with a ribbed tank top of the same blue shade and a blue velvet bolero, to give the outfit a bit of a baroque touch. I needed a bit more “Bam”, so I work my little black rose hat and my vintage 50s gold purse. My feet were clad in my beloved platforms. Karl Lagerfeld has many cartoon characters on his accessories, so even thought the outfit was blue and not black, it still fit very well into the concept of the evening.

As we walked into the back of the room, we were handed a cold glass of champagne and macaroons, with Karl’s profile printed on top. What a chic and glamorous idea! The beautiful redhead Janet Maier and Ria were spinning their awesome house beats, adding some bass and funky sound to the fashion party. The attention was on them, as they spread the love. I must admit that the guests really made a great effort with their cool outfits, funky accessories and big statements! Many celebs were there, including my girl Sabrina Setlur, looking stylish and fabulous in her black sleek Lagerfeld dress.

I was walking around the store and taking photos, admiring the people around me, having fun and listening to the happy chatter. Many people were impressed by the event, saying that the Lagerfeld store is definitely an enrichment for Frankfurt and the Goethestrasse. I have to agree with them! I was also very impressed by the prices, making it affordable for everyone to find something that they love in the store.

Even thought Mercury Retrograde has started this week, I couldn’t help but notice the electric energy and smiles thrown around the bright store. I am happy to share with you my dears that yet again, another glamorous event was gloriously celebrated in my beloved Frankfurt. As the last glass of champagne was drunk, it was time to move on and indulge in a nice calorie-rich dinner. The girls were all hungry and calling my name. As I left the store, I turned around and glanced behind me, knowing that I will come back very soon indeed. Dear Karl, you are definitely more than welcomed to our little city with a big attitude!

Villa Ratatouille Popup Opening in Frankfurt

Villa Ratatouille Popup Opening in Frankfurt 1200 774 Galia Brener

Mysterious. Delicious. Artistic. These are the first few words that come to mind when you enter this wonderful building. Located inconspicuously in the heart of Frankfurt, this silent villa sits in its splendor – pretending to be innocently empty. But it’s not. Quite the opposite actually. We rang the bell and the door quietly opened. We stepped inside and the adventure began.

We were greeted by two lovely young ladies from the Pomp brand. Very representative of Frankfurt – sparkling pink apple wine – their famous Cuvée rosé. We couldn’t help but notice the beautiful Japanese cherry blossom trees all the way up the staircase to the highest floor. We took our pink drink and made our way up to the gallery. I was really looking forward to this evening because of my love for art and food – two of my favorite elements mixed together. The first room we entered was quite a dark one. I was enticed by the beautiful hearts painted on an open hand, ready to give hope to its lucky receivers. The painting didn’t have a name, so I called it the “Hearts of Hope” – with many beautiful red hearts floating seductively towards the sky. The very talented artist – Justus Becker – told us that his work and inspiration is called “COR” – very fitting to an evening full of love and passion. The other rooms had works of art by Diana Catherine Eger and others.

As we continued up the stairway to heaven, we arrived on the floor where the dinner was to take place. There were two rooms, beautifully decorated with antique chandeliers, candles and exquisite carpets on the wall by Fashion For Floors. The tables were set up in an elegant way to allow one to meet and mingle with their neighbors and maybe even flirt with that lovely lady or gentleman across the table. Of course it wasn’t a surprise for us to hear that the dinners for every evening in the duration of the event were already sold out! This little sweet artistic surprise in Frankfurt became popular quite quickly – everyone wanted in!

In a matter of an hour, the two dining rooms filled with people, and everyone was eager to taste the luxurious delicacies of Rainer Neidhart, a well-known television cook. The “who’s who” of Frankfurt were there, the mood was happy and cheerful, the Pomp and Grauburgunder were flowing and the people were chirping with excitement. The delicious menu was served, accompanied by perfectly fitting wines to each course. The DJ was spinning his funky beats in the room next door, which gave us a perfect chance to walk around and mingle between the fabulous taste buds explosions. The bar area was full of people, all curious to see the art and get a glimpse of this awesome popup location.

I was impressed with the amazing organization and operation of the evening. The menu was served to over 100 people in the mysterious abandoned villa in perfect timing. Nobody was left out and everything was cooked to perfection. Peyman Far of the Landwehrstübchen restaurant und Max Reggiannini did a great job making it all happen – the masterminds of Villa Ratatouille. I was happy to see Daniel Tobias Etzel, owner of the WAOH agency, who spread the magic of the Villa in Frankfurt and called me up about this fabulous event. Thanks Daniel for keeping our city exciting.

The Villa is a special place in Frankfurt. I was speaking to the owner last night and he told me, “The villa was created last year as an off-space location for exhibitions (Staedel students), pop up restaurants, art and music performances and other happenings. It’s all combined with a real communal touch, and everyone feels like they are a part of it, and the atmosphere and aura of the place makes it even more special. When the villa closes, we can look back and say, as a community, we did something creative with this place and had some good times, laughs and memories.”

Villa Ratatouille, located at the Windmühlstraße 9 in Frankfurt, will be open until the 7th of May, offering us some weeks of fun bar and gallery evenings. There is a changing lineup with a new DJ every evening. You can check out the lineup on the Facebook page.

From 7pm until late at night, the Villa is the perfect place to unwind after work, indulge in artistic culture, meet new people and just have fun. Villa Ratatouille is about emotions, love and enjoying the moment in our fast paced world. I have to say that I was very impressed with this evening – definitely an enrichment to our little city with a big attitude!
